Practice Nurses

The practice nurses are available in the treatment room for nursing care and general advice on minor illnesses & injuries, children’s immunisations, all travel, Tetanus, Flu & Pneumovax injections, dressings, ear syringing, blood tests and cervical smears.

Our Practice Nurses are also trained smoking cessation advisors.

Specialist Practice Nurses

Specialist practice nurses are available, by appointment, at the following, weekly, health promotion clinics:

• DIABETES– It is important for diabetic patients to have regular check-ups to make sure they are receiving the most appropriate care
• ASTHMA — It is important for asthmatic patients to have regular check-ups to make sure they are getting the best possible benefit from their inhalers
• CORONARY HEART DISEASE— We offer appointments to all our patients who have had heart problems, to make sure that they are receiving the most appropriate care
• STROKE — We monitor all patients who have had a stroke
• SMOKING CESSATION — Our nurses are trained to support & encourage you to stop smoking
• IMMUNISATION & TRAVEL ADVICE — For all immunisations & advice on health issues relating to foreign travel
• CERVICAL SMEARS — The doctors recommend that all women aged 20-64 have a cervical Smear every 3 years. Our Practice Nurses are trained to do this for you

Healthcare Assistant

Our healthcare assistant provides support to the nursing team. She sees patients for their new patient health checks, blood pressure checks, can take blood samples and does some dressings.

Clinics and Services

MATERNITY CARE - The midwife looks after you before and after your baby is due. She is present at the weekly antenatal clinics in the surgery

FAMILY PLANNING - Make an appointment with the Nurse Practitioner or Doctor

CHILD DEVELOPMENT - Dr O’Shea has a baby clinic every Tuesday afternoon. The Health Visitors are present at the clinic

MINOR SURGERY— All the doctors perform minor surgery, by appointment. We have regular sessions for the removal of warts

PHLEBOTOMIST - Our health care worker is trained to take blood samples

MENTAL HEALTH WORKER - Our mental health worker sees patients with mental health problems, such as mild depression, anxiety or bereavement.

ADDICTION WORKER - The Practice is part of a shared-care scheme with Leeds Addiction Unit, to treat patients with substance misuse problems at the surgery

BENEFITS ADVICE WORKER - Available in the surgery to advise patients on claiming benefits

ALCOHOL WORKER - For advice on safe drinking limits ask your doctor for a referral to our primary care alcohol worker

Travel Vaccinations

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements.  This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.  There is further information about countries and vaccinations required on the links below

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible  - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations.  These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine.  Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.

Most travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge.  This is because travel vaccination is not included in the services provided by the NHS and therefore is a chargeable service.
